BMW plan for 100 years of great cars

For a company that began producing cars as its third choice of product, BMW has had tremendous global success. In 2014 it produced 2.2 million cars (including those under the Mini and Rolls Royce brands) which accounts for 3.2% of road cars produced in that year. This is no small feat when we consider the high esteem these cars are held in, not only for their build quality and driving experience but for the huge selection of models, BMW aren’t selling duds.

Surprisingly, Bavarian Motor Works began as an aircraft manufacturer, something the company has never forgotten. If you weren’t aware of this history take a glance at the BMW badge: what you're looking at is a white propeller on a blue sky! This venture ended abruptly following the German defeat in WWII and the harsh reparations set for the state; the company was forced to switch to motorcycle production. It wasn’t until 1928 that BMW produced its first car, which was essentially British, a licensed version of the Austin 7 called the Dixi.

It is now 100 years since BMW opened its doors for business and it’s plain to see they are here to stay. To commemorate this momentous occasion the automotive giant is unveiling the new limited edition 7 series, confidently dubbed THE NEXT 100 YEARS. Keeping to the centenary theme there will only be 100 7 series going on sale. There are a few engine choices, the one that most interests us is the 6.6 litre V12 which flaunts 0-60 in 3.7 seconds (in a limousine!). Beyond performance this 7 series features unique paintwork, centenary blue, and an all-white, quilted interior. If you don’t already want one it comes with a limited edition matching “Mont Blanc for BMW” fountain pen.

We won’t be getting out hands on one of these but we are applauding 100 years of excellent products. Now, for the 16th of June when the special edition Mini and Rolls Royce will be unveiled – Happy Birthday BMW!
